According to the latest forecasts made by the Consorzio Maremma Toscana, we are expecting an early grape harvest due to the high temperatures in July. Limited temperature drops between day and night and minimum temperatures that remained quite high have in fact favored veraison, creating the ideal conditions for an early harvest in Maremma with some differences between the north and south of the province.
In Capalbio, for example, the harvest of sparkling wines will begin in early August, followed by early varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier and Merlot.
Francesco Mazzei, president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana (Consortium for the Protection of Tuscan Maremma Wines), said “We hope that in August temperatures will ease and there will be sensible temperature swings, which are essential for maintaining grape quality.”
Currently, quality looks promising as well as quantity, especially compared to last year. A result achieved through the efforts of winemakers who, thanks to advanced agronomic techniques, have been able to manage the rather uncertain weather conditions. Nevertheless, it will only be in a month's time that we will have a clear picture of the whole situation.
